Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the ESSC

  • Member States Experience on AI/ML
  • Experiences of INE Spain with the use of machine learning (ML), focusing on 3 aspects: best use of statistical models in production tasks, general idea of current implementations and work in progress, reflection on the added value of ML in the context of new data sources.
  • Experience of Hungarian Central Statistical Office using AI in estimating household consumption expenditures

This item will draw upon previous discussions on the scope of an ESS CoE on ML/AI as a contribution of DIME/ITDG to the ESS innovation agenda.  Feedback will allow to better define the perimeter of activities where an ESS approach is beneficial.

Discussion on ESS research needs

The Eurostat WP 2023 includes an action for carrying out research (call for proposals) in view of supporting ESS innovation.  In 2022, a first call on Trusted Smart Surveys was launched. The discussion will help to prioritize research topics from 2023 onwards.

Open source software for official statistics

Eurostat will report on the progress of the newly created group on open source and the results of its first meeting.

Common European data spaces and official statistics

Eurostat will report on the state of the implementation of the Data Governance Act and the related European data spaces. Eurostat will present a first reflection on this topic and will enquire about countries’ experiences and plans. In addition, Eurostat will inform on the status of the implementing regulation for the high value datasets (HVD) for official statistics.

Cloud adoption by Eurostat : current status and next steps 

This point will cover the current status of the adoption of cloud computing technologies at Eurostat, focusing on the actions already taken by Eurostat and European Commission level and challenges and opportunities for the next steps. In addition, Eurostat will invite for a discussion on cloud implementation strategies in the Member States.

Blockchain for Official Statistics

Eurostat will present some concrete examples of the use of blockchain that has the potential to support data processing and validation of statistical data in the ESS.

Short information points:

Eurostat will present recent developments regarding the NACE Rev. 2.1 and CPA review and give an overview of next steps.

 

Eurostat will present the correspondenceTables R package, which aims to partially automate the processes of (i) updating the correspondence table between two classifications (ii) creating a new correspondence table between two classifications by the help of one or more pivot classifications.

The SG will be updated on the state of play regarding the migration to EDAMIS 4, the implementation of 2FA for ESS data and metadata exchange and the phase-out of RAMON. It will also be consulted on the launching of the 2023 ESS standardisation exercise.
