The Irish Labour Force Survey (LFS) provides valuable information about the labour market such as estimates of the number of people unemployed and employed classified by age, sex, marital status, heographic area, type of job, industry and occupation. It also provides estimates of the number of private households classified by the size of household ans the social class of the head of household and the composition of family units.
The survey was first conducted in Ireland in 1975 and was conducted biennially until 1983 from which time it has been conducted during April and May of each year.
The last annual Labour Force Survey occured in 1997. It was replaced by the Quarterly National Household Survey (QNHS), introduced in September 1997, in order to provide a regular and timely picture of the labour market.
