Workpackage 4 (WP4) of ESSnet Big Data investigates whether real-time measurements of ship positions, as measured by AIS (Automatic Identification System), can be used to improve the quality and internal comparability of existing statistics and to develop new statistical products. AIS data have the advantage of being generic worldwide and obtainable at European level.

WP4 is carried out by representatives of five ESSnet Big Data partners: CBS (Statistics Netherlands), which is leading WP4, and DST (Statistics Denmark), ELSTAT (Statistics Greece), SSB (Statistics Norway) and GUS (Statistics Poland).
